SOUTH ST PAUL, MINNESOTA—A Dakota County grand jury has indicted Jacob John Audie, 36, of Hudson, Wisconsin, on one count of first-degree premeditated murder and one count of second-degree intentional murder in the April shooting death of his 72-year-old roommate, Michael Maurice Schille, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced Thursday evening.
The Incident
According to court records, on the evening of April 11, 2025, at approximately 8:48 p.m., Audie called 911 and reported that he had shot Schille inside their shared apartment in South St. Paul. Responding officers found Audie in the parking lot of the building, where he complied with commands and was taken into custody. Inside, police discovered Schille seated on a couch in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the left side of his face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators located an AR-style rifle in the living room, rifle magazines in both the kitchen and bedroom, and an empty carbine casing on the couch near the victim’s body. During questioning, Audie told officers he had been Schille’s caretaker and that the two had lived together for one to two years. He admitted to shooting Schille with the victim’s own rifle.
Medical Findings
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Legal Proceedings
The indictment upgrades the initial second-degree murder charge filed in April. If convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, Audie faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, a mandatory sentence under Minnesota law.
Audie remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Dakota County Judicial Center in Hastings.
County Attorney Keena thanked the South St. Paul Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for their work on the case.
Note: Criminal charges and indictments are not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
