HASTINGS MN: The City of Hastings reported that a black bear has been located within the city limits, prompting monitoring efforts and a reminder for residents to take precautions.

According to the city, black bears are generally docile animals and will typically move along on their own if given time and space. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently monitoring the bear’s activity.

Officials are urging residents to avoid interacting with the animal and to follow basic safety guidance. The DNR shared six “BearWise” tips for those in areas where bears are active:

  • Never feed or approach bears; leave them alone

  • Secure food, garbage, and recycling

  • Remove bird feeders when bears are active

  • Do not leave pet food outdoors

  • Clean and store grills and smokers

  • Alert neighbors to bear activity
