Bloomington Mayor, City Council Address Recent Violence, Urge Community Not to Blame Entire Group

Published: October 7th 2026.

BLOOMINGTON MN - Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse and the Bloomington City Council have issued a statement addressing recent acts of violence and criminal activity in Bloomington and surrounding communities, emphasizing public safety while cautioning against blaming an entire community for the actions of individuals.

In the statement, city leaders described the recent incidents as unacceptable and acknowledged the concerns residents may have about their safety.

"The recent acts of violence and criminal activity, not only in Bloomington but in our neighboring cities, are unacceptable and concerning," the statement reads.

City officials emphasized that individuals responsible for violent crimes will be held accountable and reiterated their commitment to maintaining safe neighborhoods.

The mayor and council also addressed the backgrounds of suspects involved in recent cases, noting that they are members of the Somali American community. However, officials stressed that criminal activity should not be attributed to an entire cultural or ethnic group.

"Crime is committed by individuals not an entire group or culture," the statement reads.

City leaders highlighted the contributions of Bloomington's Somali American residents, including business owners, professionals and community leaders, describing them as an important part of the city's economic and cultural vitality.

The statement also expressed support for the Bloomington Police Department and its ongoing efforts to protect residents, assist local businesses and strengthen relationships throughout the community.

According to the mayor and council, crime in Bloomington is currently at its lowest level since the 1970s. The statement did not provide specific crime statistics to support that comparison.

Despite the recent incidents, city officials reiterated their commitment to public safety and maintaining a welcoming environment for all residents.

"Violence has no place in Bloomington. We will not tolerate the actions of those who come to Bloomington to do harm," the statement concludes.

The mayor and council said their goal remains to maintain a community where everyone feels safe, supported, healthy and connected.
