Driver Injured in Secondary Five-Vehicle Crash on I-35W in Burnsville Construction Zone

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA: A 20-year-old Burnsville man was injured Sunday evening after a secondary five-vehicle crash unfolded in a construction zone along northbound I-35W at Burnsville Parkway, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:06 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in Dakota County. Troopers say the collision happened after three vehicles involved in an earlier crash were stopped and blocking traffic lanes within the active construction zone.
Secondary Crash Followed Initial Collision
According to the State Patrol, a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross, and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado were already stopped in the northbound lanes following an earlier crash. As traffic remained blocked, a 2003 Hummer H2 was merging from the Burnsville Parkway entrance ramp onto northbound I-35W when it collided with a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia semi-truck.
The impact of that secondary collision caused injuries to the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, who had been involved in the original crash. Investigators did not immediately specify exactly how the secondary collision resulted in the driver's injuries. The injured driver is a 20-year-old Burnsville man. His identity has not yet been released by the Minnesota State Patrol and is scheduled to be made public on August 12. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.
The remaining drivers were not reported injured. These included:
A 26-year-old female of Oakdale, driver of the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross.
A 35-year-old male of Bloomington, driver of the 2003 Hummer H2.
A 39-year-old male of Willowbrook, Illinois, driver of the 2018 Freightliner Cascadia.
A 30-year-old male of Bloomington, driver of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.
Troopers reported none of the other drivers sustained injuries requiring medical treatment.
Crash Conditions
The State Patrol reported that road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, no airbags deployed in any of the five vehicles involved, and alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor for any of the identified drivers.
Burnsville Police and Burnsville Fire assisted Minnesota State Patrol at the scene of the crash.
Investigation
The Minnesota State Patrol continues to investigate both the original crash and the subsequent secondary collision. Authorities have not announced whether any citations or enforcement actions are pending.
Motorists are reminded to use extra caution when traveling through active construction zones and to remain alert for stopped traffic, emergency responders, and crash scenes.
