Burnsville Man Charged After Allegedly Fleeing Mendota Heights Officer at More Than 100 MPH

BURNSVILLE, MN: A 43-year-old Burnsville man is facing a felony charge after prosecutors allege he fled from a Mendota Heights police officer on a motorcycle at speeds exceeding 100 mph before later telling investigators he had been driving fast because he was making a video for his son.
Alejandro Javier Medina, 43, has been charged in Dakota County District Court with one felony count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. According to the criminal complaint, the incident began at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2026, while an officer was on routine patrol along westbound I-494 near Highway 52 in Mendota Heights.
Officer Estimates Motorcycle Was Traveling Around 110 MPH
The complaint alleges the officer observed a motorcycle traveling at what was described as an "extreme rate of speed." Although the officer could not obtain a radar reading, the motorcycle's speed was visually estimated at approximately 110 mph. According to the complaint, the officer activated emergency lights and sirens and attempted to catch up with the motorcycle.
As the motorcycle approached traffic near I-35E, prosecutors allege the rider slowed down. The complaint states the driver looked back toward the pursuing officer before accelerating away again. The officer got close enough to obtain the motorcycle's license plate number, but the rider allegedly accelerated to more than 100 mph again. According to the complaint, the officer ultimately terminated the pursuit because of safety concerns.
MnDOT Cameras Allegedly Track Motorcycle to Burnsville
Authorities continued attempting to locate the motorcycle without maintaining the active pursuit. According to the complaint, Minnesota Department of Transportation traffic cameras were used to trace the motorcycle's movements until it exited at County Road 42 in Burnsville.
Investigators determined the motorcycle was registered to Medina, prosecutors said. Burnsville police then responded to Medina's residence, where they took him into custody. The complaint states Medina later provided a Mirandized statement to investigators and admitted he had been driving the motorcycle.
According to prosecutors, Medina told investigators he had been traveling at a high rate of speed because he was making a video for his son. When asked why he did not stop for the Mendota Heights officer, Medina allegedly said he was scared.
Released With Conditions
A Dakota County judge issued a release order on September 22, 2026. Medina was permitted to be released without posting bail under several conditions, including remaining law-abiding, making all future court appearances, keeping the court and his attorney informed of his current address, having no same or similar offenses, and receiving no traffic-related charges. Alternatively, the court set unconditional bail or bond at $20,000.
Medina's next court appearance is scheduled for November 18, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. for an omnibus hearing at the Dakota County Judicial Center in Hastings. The felony fleeing charge carries a maximum potential sentence of three years and one day in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations and have not been proven in court. Medina is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
