Burnsville Could Replace, Relocate Warning Siren in $37K Project
BURNSVILLE MN: — Burnsville could soon have a new public warning siren with a significantly greater notification range near the former Fire Station 1 property, as the City Council considers a $37,654 project to replace and relocate the existing siren.
According to city documents, the current siren at 911 140th Street West has an effective range of approximately 5,000 to 5,500 feet. The proposed replacement would extend that range to approximately 6,400 feet, allowing emergency warnings to reach farther into the surrounding community when activated.
The city is proposing to purchase a new Federal 2001-130 siren from Federal Signal for $14,760.41. ReadyWatt Electric would receive a $22,893.92 contract to dismantle the existing siren and install and relocate the new and repurposed equipment.
The current Federal 2001 SRN siren was installed in 1999 and is being relocated as part of the redevelopment of the property.
Rather than running electrical service to the new location, the replacement siren would be powered by a new solar kit and batteries mounted to the siren pole.
Several components from the existing system will be reused, including the controller, antenna, battery cabinet and siren pole. The controller, antenna and battery equipment were replaced in 2025 under a previously approved replacement plan.
ReadyWatt Electric, which currently maintains Burnsville's emergency siren notification equipment, would handle removal of the existing siren and installation of the replacement system.
The work is connected to the city's sale of the former Fire Station 1 property at 911 140th Street West to Costco Wholesale. The purchase agreement was originally executed in 2025 as part of the planned redevelopment of the property. The transaction closed in June 2026, with Burnsville receiving $2,128,922.14 in sale proceeds.
Under the purchase agreement, the existing public notification siren is to be moved from the property into the adjacent right-of-way. The city plans to use a portion of the proceeds from the property sale to pay for the siren project.
City staff are recommending the council authorize the $14,760.41 equipment purchase from Federal Signal and award the $22,893.92 installation contract to ReadyWatt Electric.
The action requires a simple majority vote of the City Council.
