Burnsville Police Ask Public to Avoid Maple Island Road During Active Crisis Incident and Fire

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA: A large police and fire response remains active Tuesday afternoon after what authorities described as an incident involving an individual in crisis escalated into a structure fire in the 300 block of Maple Island Road.
The incident began shortly before 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, when Burnsville Police responded to what was initially reported as a mental health-related call involving a weapon. Law enforcement established a large perimeter around the neighborhood as officers worked to safely manage the situation.
At the time, no official shelter-in-place order had been announced, though residents were urged to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely.
Structure Fire Breaks Out During Police Incident
Just before 9:00 a.m., the response expanded significantly after reports of smoke coming from the home at the center of the police incident. Fire departments from multiple agencies were dispatched as the situation transitioned into both an active police incident and a structure fire.
By approximately 9:50 a.m., the incident remained ongoing as firefighters and law enforcement coordinated their response.
Around 9:45 a.m., residents closest to the scene reported receiving a localized shelter-in-place alert as authorities continued to manage the emergency.
Burnsville Officials Ask Public to Avoid Area
At approximately 10:20 a.m., the Burnsville Police Department released the following statement:
"The Burnsville Police Department is asking the public to avoid the 300 block of Maple Island Road while emergency responders manage an active incident involving an individual in crisis. Please use alternate routes and avoid the area so responders can safely manage the scene. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation."
Authorities did not immediately release additional details regarding the individual involved or whether anyone had been injured.
Smoke Visible Across the South Metro
Around 1:30 PM, the emergency scene remained active with several police and fire agencies continuing operations. Smoke was visible across the Twin Cities South Metro, which we can confirm was tied to the active police incident in the 300 block of Maple Island Road. The home at the center of the police response either caught fire during the incident or was potentially set on fire by the individual inside. The blaze appeared to have been extinguished by around 3 PM Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage to the home or provided further details regarding the circumstances that led to the fire.

As of 3 PM Tuesday afternoon, the investigation remains ongoing, and the emergency scene remains active.
