Evidence and Public Safety
Court documents say Burnsville police officers were assigned to provide security as large groups gathered following the school’s graduation ceremony. Officers reported tension between opposing groups, with individuals flashing gang signs and engaging in verbal and physical altercations.
Moments later, officers heard gunshots ring out and responded to the area, where bystanders directed them to a black Toyota Camry. The vehicle was occupied by Ali in the passenger seat and Abdiwahab as the driver. Officers detained both at the scene and observed a handgun with an extended magazine on the front passenger floorboard, as well as spent shell casings inside the car and nearby on the street. A bullet fragment was also found lodged in the headlight of a nearby parked vehicle.
One bystander shouted, “Ksoe, you missed. You dumb ass. You missed,” referring to Ali’s reported street name. Witnesses identified a person wearing a leopard-print jacket — seen interacting with the Camry — as the target of the gunfire. Two additional witnesses told police they were driving directly behind the Camry when they witnessed a confrontation between the occupants and the individual wearing a jacket. One witness stated they saw a gun barrel emerge from the passenger window and fire multiple shots.
Both suspects remain booked at the Dakota County Jail. A judge set Ali’s bail at $200,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions, including a ban from Burnsville High School property, no contact with Abdiwahab, and a requirement for random drug testing and pretrial monitoring.
Abdiwahab’s bail was set at $150,000 without conditions or $75,000 with conditions, including similar restrictions. Prosecutors said he gave misleading statements to police to shield Ali’s identity and role in the shooting.
Investigators have submitted the recovered firearm and DNA swabs from both suspects to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for forensic testing.
Assistant County Attorney Evan Frazier emphasized the danger posed by the shooting, stating both defendants’ actions presented “a great risk to public safety,” particularly given the large number of people gathered at the high school after graduation.
