Attempted Carjacking Prompts Large Police Response in Cottage Grove; Suspect Remains at Large

COTTAGE GROVE, MINNESOTA - A significant police presence was reported Tuesday evening after an attempted carjacking near 79th Street and Hemingway Avenue, prompting urgent public safety warnings and a continued search for the suspect.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on November 18, 2025, when Cottage Grove Public Safety responded to a report of an attempted carjacking. According to officials, the suspect was armed with a pocket knife and fled the area before officers arrived.

Suspect Description Released

Authorities provided the following description in hopes of receiving assistance from the public:

  • Approximately 5’6” tall

  • Wearing a blue ski mask

  • Blue tattered jeans

  • Dark-colored hoodie sweatshirt with a baseball cap beneath the hood

  • Believed to be a white or Hispanic male

  • Armed with a pocket knife

  • Last seen running northbound on Hemingway Avenue toward 79th Street

Cottage Grove Public Safety urged residents to avoid the area Tuesday night while officers conducted a search and processed the scene, but said there was no need to a shelter-in-place, but that residents in the area should remain aware of their surroundings. Anyone who may have seen the suspect or has information related to the incident is asked to call 911 immediately.

Investigation Continues Wednesday Morning

In an update provided at 8:45 a.m. on November 19, Cottage Grove Police said the investigation remains active.

“We take these matters extremely seriously and will continue to put our efforts and dedication into this investigation and will update the public when we are able,” the department stated.

No arrests have been announced, and additional details, including whether the victim was injured, have not been released.

Police again emphasize that residents should remain vigilant and report anything suspicious. They also reiterate that anyone who believes they have information that may help investigators should contact law enforcement.
