Smoke Alarm Alerts Sleeping Residents to Basement Fire in Cottage Grove

COTTAGE GROVE MN : Cottage Grove Fire Department crews responded early this morning to a structure fire at a home in the 7900 block of 68th Street Court South.

According to fire officials, the homeowners were asleep when they were awakened by their smoke alarm. Upon investigating, they discovered thick smoke filling the basement. Both occupants safely evacuated the home and called 911.

Fire crews arrived within approximately five minutes and immediately began fire suppression and search operations. The fire was quickly located and extinguished in the basement, and a thorough search of the home confirmed that no one remained inside.

The fire was contained to the basement area, and no injuries were reported.

Cottage Grove firefighters were assisted at the scene by departments from Woodbury, Saint Paul Park, Newport, and Hastings, along with MHealth EMS, Cottage Grove Police Department, and Xcel Energy.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
