UPDATE: After numerous parents and relatives of the kids involved in this incident contacted us, we can confirm that at the time of the crash, there were still elementary-aged kids on the bus. Following the crash, we have been told that the bus driver told the kids to get off the bus and walk home. It has also been reported that some older kids in the area stepped in and helped walk some of the kids home after the crash.

We’ll be reaching out to ISD 196 once again for additional information on this incident. If and when we get a response, we will provide additional updates on this story.

ORIGINAL STORY - APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA: A two-vehicle crash involving an ISD 196 school bus and a Toyota RAV4 sent one driver to the hospital Tuesday afternoon in Apple Valley. According to the Apple Valley Police Department crash report, the incident occurred around 2:25 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at the intersection of McAndrews Road and Diamond Path.

According to the police report, Vehicle #1, the ISD 196 school bus, was traveling southbound on Diamond Path and had come to a stop at the posted stop sign. The 73-year-old male driver from Apple Valley told officers he believed the intersection was clear before proceeding through.

At the same time, Vehicle #2, a 2020 Toyota RAV4 driven by a 68-year-old Rosemount woman, was heading eastbound on McAndrews Road and had the right-of-way. A witness reported that the RAV4 was approximately 100 yards from the intersection when the bus entered, and that the driver was unable to slow or react in time to avoid the collision. The RAV4 struck the front side of the school bus, causing significant damage and trapping the driver inside her vehicle. Apple Valley Firefighters extricated the woman from the RAV4. Allina Health paramedics then transported her via ground ambulance to Fairview Ridges Hospital with suspected serious injuries.

Federal regulations require school bus drivers to be given a breath test after any crash involving loss of human life or a non-fatal injury crash requiring medical treatment. The preliminary breath test for the school bus driver was 0.00. Police confirmed that the bus driver was not distracted or speeding at the time of the crash, but he was cited for failure to yield the right-of-way.

Initial emergency calls indicated that the school bus may have been carrying children at the time of the crash. However, by the time Apple Valley Police arrived at the scene, they confirmed that no students were on the bus, and no injuries were reported.

The Apple Valley Police Department continues to review the crash. We emailed ISD 196 for more information on this crash, but we never received a response.
