Burnsville Man Accused of Fleeing Police at 128 MPH in Eagan, Faces Felony Charge

EAGAN, MINNESOTA: A 21-year-old Burnsville man is facing a felony charge after allegedly fleeing from police at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour in what court records say was a densely populated area of Dakota County earlier this week.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Jason Felipe Contreras is charged with one count of Fleeing a Peace Officer in a Motor Vehicle, a felony offense under Minnesota law. The charge stems from an incident that occurred on the night of June 9, 2025.

At approximately 10:22 p.m., an Eagan police officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Yankee Doodle Road after identifying a vehicle with two registered owners, one of whom had a revoked driver's license. The criminal complaint states that the driver initially signaled that it was going to pull over for the officer, but then abruptly turned off the vehicle’s lights and accelerated rapidly away from the officer. According to the complaint, Officers reported the vehicle reached speeds of at least 128 miles per hour and ran a red light while fleeing through Eagan from officers. The pursuit ended several minutes later when the driver pulled into a parking lot and was taken into custody without further incident.

The driver was identified as Jason Contreras. According to the complaint, Contreras admitted in a post-Miranda interview that he fled because he did not have a valid license and had been drinking. The complaint states that officers also discovered an open bottle of EJ Apple Brandy inside the vehicle.

Contreras made his first court appearance on June 11, 2025, according to court records, where Prosecutors noted in their filing that he had two previous DWI convictions in 2024. Despite those recent convictions, authorities allege Contreras has continued to engage in dangerous behavior behind the wheel.

“The defendant's behavior endangered countless lives,” prosecutors wrote in support of a high bail. “He has escalated his reckless conduct by fleeing from police in a motor vehicle at speeds in excess of 120 miles in a heavily populated suburban community.”

Court documents show that the judge set bail at $50,000 without conditions or $25,000 with conditions, including electronic home monitoring with alcohol monitoring, participation in a pretrial release program, random chemical testing, abstention from alcohol and drug use, and compliance with all court orders.

Contreras remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail as of the time of writing this article, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 18, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in Hastings, Minnesota. This article provides an overview of the allegations against Contreras, detailing the charges, evidence, and potential legal outcomes. The community is reminded that charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Further updates on this case will depend on the progress of the legal proceedings.
