ORIGINAL STORY - EAGAN, MINNESOTA— Emergency crews responded just before 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, to a minor train derailment on Nicols Road, just north of Silver Bell Road. At least two train cars left the tracks, prompting a multi-agency response from Eagan Police, Eagan Fire, and MN Health. We have spoken to officials with Union Pacific, who have confirmed that eight empty rail cars derailed on an eastbound Union Pacific train. They again confirmed there were no injuries, and the cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that no train cars overturned or spilled their contents. No leaks or hazardous materials were detected, and there is no threat to public safety at this time. The only liquid reported with the train was soybean oil. However, a portion of the track appeared to be bent or warped. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
Nicols Road is currently closed from Silver Bell Road to the Minnesota River boat ramp and Cedar Nicols Trailhead while crews work to repair the track and move the train. It is unclear how long the closure will remain in place.
At least six vehicles are reportedly stuck on the north side of the train due to blocked access. No injuries have been reported. Eagan Police said anyone who had to leave their vehicles can check the department’s Facebook page for updates.
This remains a developing situation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
