FARMINGTON, MINNESOTA - The Farmington Fire Department is inviting community members to learn more about becoming paid-on-call firefighters through a series of recruitment informational meetings scheduled throughout February and March, while also marking a major milestone in the department’s operations with the launch of full-time staffing.

The recruitment informational meetings will be held at Fire Station No. 2, located at 19695 Municipal Drive, and are designed to give prospective applicants an inside look at what it’s like to serve with the department. Fire Chief Matt Price said the department is especially seeking individuals who are available to respond to calls during daytime hours.

“We’re in need of people who are available to respond to calls during the day,” Price said. “People with positions that are flexible or work from home would be perfect for this.”

The meetings will be informal and hands-on, allowing attendees to tour the fire station, view fire apparatus, and explore firefighting equipment. Current firefighters will be available to answer questions about training, job expectations, and department culture.

The scheduled informational meeting dates and times are:

  • Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. — Station 2

  • Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 8:30 a.m. — Station 2

  • Monday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. — Station 2

  • Monday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. — Station 2

Chief Price also encouraged prospective applicants to bring their partners, noting that the commitment of serving as a paid-on-call firefighter can affect the entire household.

“We want them to attend as well because a position like this affects the whole family,” Price said.

No prior fire or rescue experience is required to be considered for a paid-on-call firefighter position. All training is provided through the department. Paid-on-call firefighters are eligible for an hourly wage and a retirement pension.

Full-Time Staffing Begins

In a significant operational update, the Farmington Fire Department announced on Facebook that it officially began its first full-time staffing shift on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 6 a.m.

Under the new model, three rotating full-time crews will work 48-hour shifts, providing enhanced and consistent staffing coverage. The department’s part-time paid-on-call firefighters will continue to play a vital role by staffing apparatus and supporting ongoing operations.

Department officials said the change represents a major step forward in service delivery for the city and surrounding areas.

“We are incredibly excited to provide this enhanced level of service to the City of Farmington, as well as our surrounding townships and neighboring communities,” the department said in a statement. “This is a big step forward, and we’re proud to continue serving our community with dedication and professionalism.”

Residents interested in learning more about becoming a paid-on-call firefighter or attending an informational meeting can contact Fire Chief Matt Price at MPrice@FarmingtonMN.gov or visit FarmingtonMN.gov/BecomeaFirefighter for additional information.
