Farmington Celebrates National Skating Month with Open Skate and S’mores & More Events

FARMINGTON, MINNESOTA – The City of Farmington’s Parks and Recreation Department invites residents and visitors to lace up their skates this January as it celebrates National Skating Month with two special community skating events and ongoing open skate opportunities through early March.

Outdoor Skating, S’mores, and Winter Fun

The first event coincides with the city’s S’mores & More winter gathering, scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the warming house at Rambling River Park, located at 4200 208th St. W.

Attendees can expect an afternoon of outdoor skating paired with family-friendly activities, including skating games, music, s’mores, hot cocoa, and other winter treats. Participants are encouraged to bring their own skates for this event.

National Skating Month - Open Skate at the Arena

Later in the month, the city will host National Skating Month - Open Skate on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Schmitz-Maki Arena, located at 114 W. Spruce St.

The event is free to attend with a food shelf donation; all donated items benefit the Farmington Food Shelf. Skate rentals will be available for $6 per pair on a first-come, first-served basis.

Regular Open Skate Schedule Continues

In addition to the special events, regular open skate sessions will continue at Schmitz-Maki Arena:

  • Wednesdays: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

  • Sundays: 1:30 – 3 p.m.

These sessions will run through Friday, March 6, 2026. Skaters should note that there is no open skate on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

City officials encourage residents of all ages to take advantage of the winter season by enjoying these skating opportunities, whether outdoors at Rambling River Park or indoors at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
