HASTINGS MN: Police in Hastings, Minnesota responded to a crisis situation Thursday morning involving a potentially suicidal man who had access to weapons inside a residence.

According to the Hastings Police Department, officers were called at about 10:51 a.m. on March 5, 2026, to the 1900 block of Maple Street after a report of a man in crisis. The caller told police the man had been consuming alcohol and had access to weapons inside the home. Another man was initially reported to be inside the residence as well.

Officers responding to the scene were initially unable to make contact with the man. A roommate later exited the home and confirmed that the man had access to weapons and had expressed a desire for “suicide by cop.”

Police issued a shelter-in-place alert to nearby residents through Everbridge and secured nearby roadways with marked patrol vehicles. An armored vehicle was also staged in the area as a precaution.

The South Metro SWAT Crisis Negotiation Team responded and was able to establish phone contact with the man. During negotiations, officials confirmed that no other people remained inside the home.

Authorities said the man told negotiators he would shoot law enforcement if they entered the residence but stated he did not intend to harm anyone else.

Officials determined the man was in crisis, and a social worker took over primary communication with him. Police later determined that the visible law enforcement presence was increasing the man’s agitation. As a result, officers were withdrawn from the immediate area while crisis personnel continued communicating with him.

Police cleared the scene at approximately 3:22 p.m.
