Heat Advisory Issued for Twin Cities

TWIN CITIES MN: A Heat Advisory is in effect Friday afternoon across much of the Twin Cities metro, with heat index values expected to climb as high as 97 degrees.

The National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen issued the advisory for Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties. It is in effect from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.

The advisory includes Minneapolis, St. Paul, Blaine, Chanhassen, Chaska, Shakopee, Hastings, Stillwater and Victoria.

The National Weather Service says hot temperatures combined with high humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for people spending extended periods outdoors.

The advisory also covers Ramsey County, including St. Paul and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, meaning fairgoers should be prepared for potentially dangerous heat during the afternoon.

People attending the Minnesota State Fair are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, take breaks from the heat and avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight when possible. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can also help reduce the risk of overheating.

Fairgoers should pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke in themselves and others, particularly during the hottest portion of the afternoon.

The National Weather Service recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activities when possible and moving them to the early morning or evening.

Anyone spending time outdoors Friday should stay hydrated and take action if symptoms of heat-related illness develop.

The Heat Advisory is scheduled to expire at 6 p.m. Friday.
