MINNETONKA: A man is facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors allege he targeted patrons at several Minnetonka fitness centers, stole wallets and financial transaction cards, and used the stolen cards to make thousands of dollars in unauthorized purchases.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County, Abdulkhalaq Jama Hassan has been charged with one count of felony identity theft and one count of felony financial transaction card fraud. The alleged offenses occurred between March 21 and June 28, 2026.

According to the complaint, Minnetonka police investigated multiple theft reports from Planet Fitness locations and the Williston Fitness Center. Investigators allege the incidents followed a similar pattern, with victims leaving wallets or vehicle keys in unsecured lockers while working out. Victims later discovered wallets missing, vehicles had been entered, or received fraud alerts showing unauthorized purchases at nearby businesses.

The complaint outlines several alleged incidents:

  • March 21: Police allege Hassan entered a victim's vehicle after the victim left vehicle keys in an unlocked locker at Planet Fitness. According to the complaint, stolen financial transaction cards were later used at a Speedway gas station, with surveillance video allegedly identifying Hassan.

  • March 22: Another Planet Fitness patron reported missing wallets and keys. Prosecutors allege surveillance footage from a Speedway in Plymouth identified Hassan attempting to use stolen financial transaction cards.

  • May 16: A victim reported unauthorized gas station purchases after leaving a duffel bag containing a vehicle key in an unsecured locker. According to the complaint, surveillance video from the fitness center and multiple gas stations allegedly showed Hassan using the victim's financial transaction cards.

  • May 22: Police responded to a reported theft at the Williston Fitness Center after a wallet was allegedly taken from a locker. Prosecutors allege surveillance footage from both the fitness center and a nearby Circle K identified Hassan attempting to use the victim's card.

  • June 24: Investigators allege a wallet was stolen after a locker lock was broken at Planet Fitness. According to the complaint, surveillance video allegedly showed Hassan purchasing gift cards and other items using the victim's financial transaction cards.

  • June 28: Another Planet Fitness member reported a wallet stolen from an unsecured locker. Prosecutors allege surveillance footage showed Hassan attempting to purchase a $500 gift card before completing a smaller purchase using one of the victim's debit cards after the larger transaction was declined.

According to the criminal complaint, the alleged scheme involved seven victims and more than $6,000 in successful and attempted fraudulent financial transaction card purchases.

Hassan is charged with one count of felony identity theft and one count of felony financial transaction card fraud. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
