Man Charged in Stabbing Near U of M Campus, Arrested While Skateboarding

MINNEAPOLIS: — A 19-year-old man has been charged with felony second-degree assault after allegedly stabbing a man multiple times near the University of Minnesota campus early Friday morning, leaving the victim with a collapsed lung, before police later found the suspect skateboarding at Eliot Park, according to a Hennepin County criminal complaint.
Nicholas Steven Nunez Rodriguez is charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm in connection with the September 4 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, University of Minnesota police officers responded to the 1200 block of 4th Street SE at approximately 2:33 a.m. after several 911 callers reported a stabbing.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man suffering from several stab wounds to the front and back of his torso, the complaint alleges. The man was transported to a hospital, where he was treated for his injuries, which included a collapsed lung.
Bystanders told police that the victim had been involved in an altercation with Nunez Rodriguez before Nunez Rodriguez allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times, according to the probable cause statement. The complaint says Nunez Rodriguez then walked away from the area.
A short time later, Minneapolis Park Police contacted University of Minnesota police and reported that Nunez Rodriguez was at Eliot Park and was skateboarding, according to the complaint.
Police responded and apprehended Nunez Rodriguez. During the arrest, he allegedly told officers that the knife used in the incident was in his pocket, according to the complaint.
Police recovered a knife and arrested Nunez Rodriguez without incident. The complaint states that he remained in custody at the time it was filed.
Nunez Rodriguez is charged with felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations. Nunez Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
