Man Fatally Shot by Police Following Domestic Assault Call in Coon Rapids
COON RAPIDS, MINNESOTA - A man was fatally shot by police Wednesday afternoon, May 21, 2025, following a domestic assault call in Coon Rapids involving a knife, authorities said.
According to the Coon Rapids Police Department, officers were dispatched at 12:01 p.m. to a home in the 300 block of 111th Avenue after a 911 call from a woman who reported being cut by a man with a knife. Another adult male was also present at the scene. When officers arrived, they engaged the armed suspect from outside the residence and attempted to de-escalate the situation. During the standoff, officers said they heard a woman screaming inside the home. Shortly afterward, both the injured woman and the second man exited the residence. The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The other man was uninjured.
Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the suspect refused to exit the home. Officers initially attempted to subdue him using a 40 mm less-lethal round, but the suspect retreated further inside. Police then entered the residence, where the man continued to threaten officers with the knife. A second less-lethal round was fired, but the suspect advanced toward officers, prompting a third officer to use a firearm, striking the man. When the suspect attempted to rise, a fourth officer deployed a taser.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid, and the man was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital, where he later died.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is leading the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. All officers were wearing body cameras that recorded the incident and were placed on standard administrative leave.
The deceased's identity has not yet been released. The BCA is handling all media inquiries related to the investigation.
