MAPLE GROVE: - 29-year-old registered sex offender from Oregon is facing three felony charges in Hennepin County after allegedly using a false identity to pose as a 17-year-old homeless student while attempting to enroll at Maple Grove High School.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County, Makayla Ray Craig allegedly used the name “Molly Lennox Fox,” claiming to be a 17-year-old homeless youth from Oregon without identification documents.
The complaint states that Craig attempted to enroll at Maple Grove High School under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which provides educational protections for students experiencing homelessness.
Craig allegedly insisted on immediate enrollment, citing the federal law. School officials enrolled Craig in an online program due to the lack of identification.
On October 19, 2026, Maple Grove police received information from a concerned school staff member regarding the enrollment attempt.
During the investigation, officers determined that the person claiming to be Molly Fox was allegedly Craig, whose date of birth is July 15, 1997.
According to the complaint, Craig continued identifying as Molly Lennox Fox during an interview with investigators after being advised of Miranda rights.
Craig reportedly told investigators about finding sobriety and wanting to attend school, claiming to have never previously attended school. Craig also described initially applying to a school in Minneapolis and being accepted into an alternative high school program.
The complaint states that Craig wanted to attend classes in person to experience school life firsthand.
After reportedly crashing a vehicle while driving without a license, Craig allegedly decided to apply to Maple Grove High School because it was closer to where Craig was staying.
Investigators say Craig acknowledged completing the school's enrollment paperwork and a temporary occupancy form without assistance.
According to the complaint, Craig also told school staff before meeting in person that Craig appeared older than 17, apparently anticipating questions about age.
Craig further expressed concern about being mistaken for Makayla Ray Craig, described during the interview as a registered sex offender from Oregon.
Investigators subsequently determined that Craig was a registered sex offender from Sweet Home, Oregon, following a May 23, 2023, conviction. The complaint states that the victim in that offense appeared to have been a minor.
Authorities also reported that Craig had been out of compliance with sex offender registration requirements since October 22, 2025.
Craig has been charged with two counts of aggravated forgery and one count of forgery involving the use of false identification documents.
The two aggravated forgery charges each carry a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. The third forgery charge carries a maximum possible sentence of three years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
Craig is currently in custody, according to court records.
The criminal complaint does not allege that Craig attended in-person classes at Maple Grove High School or had contact with students.
All charges are allegations, and Craig is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
