Person Shot During Attempted Vehicle Break-In in Inver Grove Heights, Suspect Still Sought

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS MN: A person was shot early Friday morning during an incident involving an attempted vehicle break-in in Inver Grove Heights, according to the Inver Grove Heights Police Department.

Police said officers were dispatched at approximately 2:45 a.m. on May 8, 2026, to the 3300 block of 76th Street on a report of shots fired and a person struck by gunfire.

According to the media release, officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate them. Officers located the caller, who had suffered a gunshot wound during the incident.

Police said information gathered at the scene indicated the suspect was attempting to gain access to the victim’s vehicle when they were confronted by the victim. Following a short verbal altercation, gunfire was exchanged by both parties, according to police.

The suspect fled eastbound on foot while the victim returned to their residence and called 911.

The victim was transported to a metro-area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

Police said the suspect has not been located and should be considered armed and dangerous. The department urged the public not to approach the suspect and to call 911 with any information.

Investigators are also asking residents in the area with outdoor surveillance cameras to review footage from around the time of the incident. Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact investigators at investigations@ighmn.gov.
