ROSEMOUNT, MINNESOTA — A garage fire involving a potential vehicle prompted a large, multi-day, multi-agency fire response at a Rosemount home over the weekend. According to the Rosemount Fire Chief, 10 fire departments responded to the fire, and crews returned Sunday morning after flames flared up again.
The Rosemount Fire Department and the Apple Valley Fire Department were first dispatched at approximately 10:03 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, to a residence in the 13000 block of Danube Lane for reports of a potential vehicle on fire inside a garage, with flames spreading to the garage structure. All occupants were reported to be safely out of the home prior to firefighters’ arrival.
The first fire units arrived around 10:09 a.m. and confirmed an active working fire. Initial reports indicated the vehicle involved may have been an electric vehicle, which can complicate firefighting efforts due to battery-related fire behavior and the potential for extended suppression operations. The Rosemount Police Chief said the cause of the fire remains under investigation and was unable to confirm at the time whether the vehicle was an electric car. We are working to confirm those details.
As crews worked to control the fire and prevent further spread, the incident was upgraded to a second-alarm fire at 10:13 a.m., bringing additional resources from Apple Valley. Conditions continued to demand more personnel and equipment, and at 10:34 a.m., the fire was upgraded to a third-alarm, prompting mutual aid from Apple Valley and the Eagan Fire Department.
Firefighting operations continued throughout the late morning and into the afternoon. At approximately 2:30 p.m., officials further escalated the response and called in additional mutual aid, but the alarm levels were not expanded beyond a third alarm. We can confirm that additional help was provided by at least the Lakeville Fire Department, Inver Grove Heights Fire Department, and the Hastings Fire Department. We are working to confirm which other fire agencies assisted with this fire. In addition to the fire mutual aid, M-Health medics, Rosemount Police, and the public works department were also called to the scene. The fire chief reports that the extreme weather conditions were the reason for the expansive response to this fire.
Firefighters focused on extinguishing the fire, addressing hot spots, and monitoring the structure for any additional fire extension. No injuries were reported during Saturday’s incident, and all family members were able to get out of the home.
Crews Return Sunday Morning
Fire crews were called back to the same residence the following day after reports of renewed fire activity.
On Sunday morning, January 25, 2026, the Rosemount and Apple Valley Fire Departments were dispatched again to the Danube Lane home after reports of flames once again coming from the structure. Upon arrival, police and fire personnel confirmed working flames coming from the building.
Crews worked to suppress the renewed fire activity and secure the structure.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, including confirmation of whether the vehicle involved was an electric vehicle and whether the Sunday flare-up was related to residual heat or hot spots from Saturday’s fire. Damage estimates have not yet been released.
Two Families Lost Everything
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support the Peterson and Larson families, who reportedly lost everything in the fire. According to the fundraiser, the longtime home, shared by both families, was completely destroyed in the January 24th blaze. While all family members, including several young children, were able to escape safely, the loss has been described as total. Firefighters reportedly told the families this was one of the most severe residential fires they had encountered. The home, built in 2001 by Kerry and Chris Peterson, had served as the center of family life for more than two decades and recently became home to the Larson family as well.
The fundraiser describes the home as a place filled with memories and plans for the future, particularly after the Larson family and their three children moved in last summer. The families say they lost all personal belongings, including children’s items, birth keepsakes, family heirlooms, photo albums, and irreplaceable memorabilia collected over generations. In the immediate aftermath of the fire, funds raised will help cover temporary housing, basic necessities, and items to help the children feel safe and supported during this transition. Those wishing to help can find the fundraiser titled “Support for Peterson and Larson Family After House Fire.”
