MINNESOTA – The nation’s blood supply remains under significant strain, with hospitals continuing to receive blood products at a faster rate than donations are coming in, according to the American Red Cross. As a result, patients across the country who rely on blood transfusions and platelets for lifesaving medical care are facing ongoing challenges tied to the shortage.
Blood and platelet donations are critical for a wide range of medical needs, including trauma care, cancer treatments, surgeries, and chronic illnesses. When donation levels drop, hospitals can be forced to delay procedures or operate with limited supplies, putting vulnerable patients at risk.
To help stabilize the blood supply and meet patient needs, the American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to schedule a blood or platelet donation now through Feb. 28. As a thank-you, donors who give during this period will receive a $20 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
“Donors are truly the missing piece in helping our blood supply recover,” the organization said, emphasizing that every donation can help save multiple lives and ensure hospitals have what they need during emergencies and routine care alike.
Appointments can be made online at https://rdcrss.org/4rp2EPR, where donors can also check eligibility requirements and find nearby donation locations.
Officials stress that blood donations are needed year-round, but consistent participation during shortages is especially important to protect patients and maintain a stable national blood supply.
