MINNEAPOLIS: — A 25-year-old woman is facing a felony assault charge after prosecutors allege she repeatedly spit on a Minneapolis police officer and paramedics while emergency personnel were attempting to assist her.

Sundus Abdiaziz Mohamed has been charged in Hennepin County District Court with fourth-degree assault of a peace officer involving the intentional transfer of bodily fluids, a felony. The charge carries a maximum possible sentence of three years in prison, a $6,000 fine, or both.

According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a Minneapolis residence at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Sept. 13 after a social gathering involving the resident's friends and other people the resident reportedly did not know.

Prosecutors allege Mohamed was agitated, heavily intoxicated and unable to care for herself. An officer requested emergency medical personnel for a welfare hold.

The complaint alleges Mohamed spit on a paramedic, with saliva landing on the paramedic's arm. As an officer attempted to control Mohamed, she allegedly kicked the paramedic in the groin.

Police then placed Mohamed in handcuffs, according to the complaint.

Prosecutors allege Mohamed subsequently spit toward an officer, striking the officer in the face with saliva. The complaint states she continued spitting toward the same officer and allegedly struck the officer in the face a second time.

While paramedics were providing care, Mohamed allegedly spit on a paramedic and kicked another paramedic in the leg, according to the complaint.

The felony charge specifically concerns the allegations involving the peace officer. The complaint states Mohamed was in custody at the time it was filed.

The allegations contained in a criminal complaint are accusations and have not been proven in court. Mohamed is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
