APPLE VALLEY MN: A man has been charged with felony theft after authorities allege he concealed more than $1,300 worth of merchandise in a duffel bag at an Apple Valley retail store.
Kevin John Ayd, 67, is charged in Dakota County District Court with one count of felony theft involving property valued at more than $1,000 but not more than $5,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Apple Valley police were called to a retail store on Sept. 30 following a reported theft.
Loss prevention employees told officers they observed Ayd selecting a large number of items and concealing them inside a duffel bag, the complaint alleges. Employees reportedly monitored him on store surveillance cameras as he continued through the store.
The complaint alleges Ayd went through the checkout and paid for a small number of items before leaving without paying for the merchandise concealed in the bag.
Loss prevention employees stopped Ayd after he left the store and brought him back inside before contacting police, according to the complaint. Employees recovered the allegedly stolen merchandise, which authorities valued at $1,381.40.
Police also reviewed store surveillance video that allegedly showed Ayd concealing merchandise in the duffel bag and leaving without paying for those items.
The felony theft charge carries a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations. Ayd is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
