Body Believed to Be Missing Mendota Heights Doctor Found in Wisconsin Forest

MENDOTA HEIGHTS: A body believed to be that of missing Mendota Heights resident Dr. Edward Hanton has been located in northwestern Wisconsin, according to the Mendota Heights Police Department.
Authorities said the body was found Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 4, in a heavily wooded area of Douglas County Forest Land in the Town of Summit. Officials said a forensic examination and positive identification will be conducted.
Dr. Hanton, 89, was reported missing after leaving his Mendota Heights home during the afternoon of July 22. Investigators previously said an electronic ping placed him on Highway 48 near Hinckley at about 5 p.m., and surveillance video later showed his vehicle in the Danbury-Webster area around 6 p.m. His family believed he may have been traveling toward Superior or a family property near Amnicon Lake.
His vehicle was discovered on July 27 on a trail west of Bear Lake and east of Carlson Road, between Pioneer Trail and Tower Fire Lane. An extensive multi-day search involving numerous law enforcement agencies, K-9 teams, firefighters, and volunteers ultimately led to the discovery of the body.
Dr. Hanton's family released a statement thanking everyone who assisted in the search.
"We want to express our deepest gratitude for the law enforcement agencies, search and rescue teams, and members of the community who dedicated their time, expertise, and compassion to the search efforts. Your unwavering commitment, countless hours, and kindness have meant more to our family than words can express. Thank you for standing with us during this incredibly difficult time."
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the St. Louis County, Minnesota Rescue Squad and K-9 Teams, the Sawyer County, Wisconsin K-9 Team, and volunteers from the Towns of Summit, Superior, Oakland, and Parkland fire departments.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Douglas County Medical Examiner's Office continue to investigate.
