BROOKLYN CENTER MN: A woman is facing felony charges after authorities say she crashed a vehicle into the front steps of an apartment complex in Brooklyn Center, seriously injuring a man, while allegedly possessing cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County, 37-year-old Amanda Lynne Gorman has been charged with criminal vehicular operation causing substantial bodily harm by gross negligence and fifth-degree drug possession.
The complaint states that officers with the Brooklyn Center Police Department responded at about 7:18 p.m. on May 8 to a reported crash in the 7000 block of Brooklyn Boulevard.
When officers arrived, they found a vehicle stopped near the front steps of an apartment building. The driver was identified as Gorman.
According to the complaint, officers observed that Gorman appeared confused and disoriented while they spoke with her. The complaint states she initially did not believe she had been involved in a crash. Officers later showed her damage to the front of the vehicle, which had allegedly struck the apartment building steps.
A man identified in court documents as NGD was found injured near the steps. Authorities said he suffered a serious leg injury and was transported for medical treatment.
Witnesses told officers they heard a loud crash before finding the victim on the ground calling for help after being struck by the vehicle, according to the complaint.
Investigators also reported finding an ignition interlock device inside the vehicle, along with suspected drug paraphernalia and narcotics. According to the complaint, officers recovered a glass pipe, a prescription bottle containing a razor blade, and a baggie containing a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine. The substance allegedly weighed approximately 0.65 grams.
The complaint also states officers found two empty vodka bottles in the back seat and a duffle bag containing a green leafy substance consistent with marijuana.
Authorities transported Gorman to North Memorial Health Hospital for a blood draw. In a post-Miranda statement, the complaint states Gorman admitted to using cocaine the previous day at around 3 p.m.
Court records cited in the complaint indicate Gorman has a prior conviction for criminal vehicular operation from 2022.
Gorman remains in custody in connection with the case.
Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
