BROOKLYN CENTER: Police in Brooklyn Center say more than 50 juveniles caused disturbances at Firehouse Park on Sunday, followed by another incident Monday involving more than 100 juveniles, fights, fireworks, and reports of property damage.

According to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers and Brooklyn Center Recreation staff first responded Sunday, May 24, to reports of a large gathering at Firehouse Park. Police said the park was closed after disturbances involving more than 50 juveniles, and the group dispersed after officers and recreation staff issued dispersal orders.

Later Sunday evening, officers monitored additional large gatherings near the 2900 block of Bass Lake Road. The Metro Transit Police Department assisted officers with helping teens leave the area, according to police. Some businesses temporarily locked their doors during the incidents.

Police said officers were again dispatched to Firehouse Park on Monday between approximately 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. for reports of fights, fireworks, and disturbances involving more than 100 juveniles.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Brooklyn Park Police Department assisted during the response. Authorities said some nearby businesses secured their doors due to reports of property damage.

Brooklyn Center police said so-called “park takeover” events have become a growing trend across the Twin Cities metro area and are often organized quickly through social media, making them difficult to predict.
