MINNEAPOLIS/BROOKLYN CENTER: An officer-involved shooting in Brooklyn Center Sunday afternoon is preliminarily believed to be connected to a deadly double homicide that occurred earlier in the day in Minneapolis, according to law enforcement officials.
The Brooklyn Center Police Department said officers were dispatched around 3:55 p.m. to the 5500–5600 blocks of Brooklyn Boulevard after receiving reports of a man waving a handgun outside retail businesses.
According to police, officers encountered the armed 24-year-old suspect and gunfire was exchanged. The suspect was struck during the exchange. Officers rendered medical aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police say preliminary information indicates the suspect is connected to a double homicide on the 4200 block of Irving Avenue North in Minneapolis.
During a press conference, Brian O'Hara said investigators believe the suspect went to a residence after being released from jail and shot two of his cousins inside the home — a 23-year-old and a 14-year-old. Both victims died from their injuries.
O’Hara said the suspect had been arrested on Feb. 15 on warrants related to fleeing police and possession of a modified handgun before being released.
Authorities said the victims’ grandmother was inside the home at the time of the shooting, along with four children ages 7, 8, 9 and 10. The children were not physically injured.
Police say the suspect later encountered officers in Brooklyn Center, where the officer-involved shooting occurred.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been requested to investigate the use-of-force incident. The involved officers have been placed on standard critical incident leave and were wearing body-worn cameras.
Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active.
