Grand Jury Indicts Burnsville Man on First-Degree Murder Charges in Fatal Stabbing of Danielle Grace Warren

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA – A Dakota County grand jury has returned an indictment charging 48-year-old Jason Philip Filas of Burnsville with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Danielle Grace Warren, 32, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced Thursday, October 2, 2025.

The indictment charges Filas with:

  • First-degree premeditated murder

  • First-degree murder while committing domestic abuse with a past pattern of domestic abuse

  • Second-degree intentional murder

If convicted on either first-degree murder count, Filas faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. He remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail, and a future court date will be set in the coming days.

Background of the Case

The charges stem from an incident on May 7, 2025, in Burnsville. According to the original criminal complaint, Burnsville police were dispatched to a home around 9:35 a.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance. Officers arriving at the scene observed blood on the front door handle. Looking through a back window, they saw a person slumped inside and forced entry into the home.

Inside, officers found Warren, who had suffered multiple stab wounds to the face, neck, and chest. A bloody 12-inch kitchen knife was recovered nearby. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two young children belonging to the couple were inside the residence but were unharmed.

Investigators learned that earlier that morning, Warren had phoned her sister twice. In the first call, she said she was afraid of Filas after he became upset over seeing another man leave the home on a security camera. During the second call, Warren pretended to be speaking with the police while Filas was inside. She suddenly screamed, “He has a knife, call 911!” before the line disconnected.

Her sister immediately called 911 and tried to call back. Filas allegedly answered, saying, “She should have never cheated on me, you better call 911,” before hanging up.

Arrest and Prior Domestic Violence

Following an alert to surrounding agencies, a Lakeville police officer spotted Filas’ vehicle traveling at a high speed. After stopping the vehicle, Filas allegedly ignored commands, advanced toward the officer, and fled on foot before being subdued with a Taser.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Warren had at least nine stab wounds to the head, neck, and torso, consistent with homicidal violence.

Court records show Filas had a history of domestic violence involving Warren. In March 2025, he was charged with domestic assault, and in April, he pleaded guilty to violating a domestic abuse no-contact order (DANCO). Burnsville city prosecutors were handling those cases at the time of Warren’s death.

What’s Next

The indictment elevates the case from the earlier second-degree murder charge to include first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree murder while committing domestic abuse, both carrying mandatory life sentences.

Dakota County Attorney Keena emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting that the charges reflect both the premeditation involved and the ongoing pattern of domestic abuse.

Filas continues to be held at the Dakota County Jail on a $2 million bond. His next court date is set for October 15, 2025, at 1 PM in Hastings, Minnesota.
