ORIGINAL STORY - TURTLE LAKE TOWNSHIP, MINNESOTA - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in rural Cass County that left one sheriff’s deputy wounded and a male suspect dead Sunday afternoon.

According to a press release from Cass County Sheriff Bryan Welk, deputies were dispatched at 4:37 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots near homes in the area of Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road NW (County Road 13) in Turtle Lake Township, just outside Walker.

Deputy Shot During Foot Pursuit

Deputies arriving in the area began investigating the reported gunfire. A short time later, they attempted to make contact with a man walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW. Sheriff Welk reported that the man immediately fled on foot, prompting deputies to pursue.

During that pursuit, there was an exchange of gunfire between deputies and the suspect. One Cass County deputy was struck by gunfire. Emergency crews transported the injured deputy by air ambulance to a hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, for advanced medical care. The deputy’s condition has not been released.

The male subject involved in the shooting was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not been provided at this time.

BCA Now Leading Investigation

Sheriff Welk said that deputies’ body-worn cameras were activated throughout the incident, and those recordings will be part of the ongoing investigation. As standard protocol in critical incidents, all deputies involved have been placed on critical incident leave pending the results of the investigation.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension responded to the scene shortly after the shooting and has now assumed primary investigative responsibility. The BCA will conduct interviews, process evidence, and review body camera footage as part of its investigation.

Authorities say the Minnesota BCA will release additional details as the investigation progresses. No further updates were immediately available Sunday evening at the time of this press release.
