CASTLE ROCK, MINNESOTA – Crews Battle Rapidly Spreading Brush Fire Amid High Fire Danger Conditions
Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded Monday afternoon to a fast-moving brush fire in rural Dakota County, Minnesota, that quickly grew to dozens of acres amid strong winds and dry conditions. According to initial dispatch information, the Randolph-Hampton Fire Department was called at approximately 2:37 p.m. on May 4, 2026, to a reported brush fire in the 1900 block of 220th Street East in Castle Rock, Minnesota, estimated at around 30 acres.
Rapid Growth Fueled by Wind
Fire crews arrived at the scene with challenging conditions, with sustained northwest winds reported at around 28 miles per hour, according to initial scanner traffic. The combination of wind and dry vegetation contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources had already placed Dakota County under a High Fire Danger rating on Monday, warning that fires could ignite easily and spread quickly under the day’s conditions.

2:50 p.m.: Farmington crews arrived on scene and reported an estimated 40 acres already burned

A second brush truck and water tender from Farmington
Brush and tender units from Lakeville Fire Department
Brush and tender units from the Rosemount Fire Department
The rapid escalation highlights how quickly the fire grew in the early stages. Crews began to leave the scene just before 4:30 PM.
