CHANHASSEN - A 49-year-old Chanhassen man is facing three criminal charges, including felony fourth-degree assault of a peace officer, after allegedly telling Carver County sheriff’s deputies “see ya mother f***ers” while attempting to leave a residence where he was prohibited from being. Authorities allege the man subsequently resisted arrest, attempted to bite a deputy, and kicked two deputies during a struggle to take him into custody.

Ryan Lee Johnson has been charged in Carver County District Court with one felony count of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer causing demonstrable bodily harm, one gross misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer, and one gross misdemeanor count of obstructing legal process.

According to the criminal complaint, deputies responded to a residence on Pleasant View Road in Chanhassen at approximately 5:40 p.m. on October 16 after receiving a report that Johnson was at the property despite being prohibited from being there.

Authorities were aware that Johnson was subject to a probable cause pickup order related to an alleged assault involving an individual identified in court documents as N.J. The complaint states that Johnson was also prohibited from contacting that individual or being at the residence under conditions of release imposed in a separate criminal case.

Upon arriving, deputies learned that Johnson was inside the residence. After safely removing a juvenile male from the home, deputies entered the property.

According to the complaint, deputies subsequently heard a garage door opening and observed Johnson entering a vehicle. Johnson allegedly stated, "see ya mother f***ers," while attempting to start the vehicle.

Deputies ordered Johnson out of the vehicle, at which point he allegedly began pacing quickly and refused commands to get on the ground.

The complaint states that Deputy Personius deployed her Taser, causing Johnson to fall to the ground. Deputies then attempted to take him into custody, but Johnson allegedly continued resisting by pulling away and thrashing his body.

During the struggle, Johnson allegedly attempted to bite Deputy VanderPlas before kicking him with an unrestrained leg.

Prosecutors further allege that Johnson kicked Deputy Gutknecht multiple times in the pelvic area, causing bruising.

The felony assault charge carries a maximum potential sentence of three years in prison, a $6,000 fine, or both. The gross misdemeanor assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.

The charges are allegations, and Johnson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
