Deputy-Involved Shooting Leaves One Dead After Pursuit in Clearwater County

Published: November 14, 2025

BAGLEY, MINNESOTA - A man with an active felony warrant was shot and killed Thursday afternoon after a pursuit and armed confrontation with law enforcement, according to a press release from the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 12:12 p.m. on November 13, 2025, when a deputy on patrol spotted an adult male at the Cenex convenience store in the 1300 block of Central Street West in Bagley. The deputy recognized the man and knew he was wanted on a felony warrant.

When the deputy approached with the intention of taking the man into custody, a physical altercation ensued. During the struggle, the man broke free, entered his vehicle, and quickly fled the scene. The deputy pursued him eastbound on U.S. Highway 2, and additional Clearwater County deputies and Bagley Police officers joined the pursuit. According to the sheriff’s office, the fleeing suspect drove erratically, at times entering the westbound lanes of the highway and forcing law enforcement to attempt multiple unsuccessful blocking maneuvers. The pursuit continued until the man turned off the highway, drove through the yard of a residence, and then south onto McDougal Avenue NW.

The chase ended when the man drove into a second residential yard, where law enforcement officers stopped the vehicle. As deputies and officers attempted to take him into custody, the man allegedly discharged a weapon, firing what was described as a flare-type projectile toward them.

A deputy then fired their service weapon, striking the man. First responders, including Bagley Sanford Ambulance personnel, immediately began life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

It was reported that one deputy sustained a minor injury during the incident.

Officials confirm that body cameras were worn and activated throughout the encounter.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has been called in to conduct the investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. No names have been released, and additional details will come directly from the BCA once it completes a preliminary investigation.

This remains an active investigation.
