Cottage Grove Police Investigating Post-Fireworks Altercation That Led to Arrests of Mother and Daughter

COTTAGE GROVE, MINNESOTA: The Cottage Grove Police Department is investigating an altercation that occurred following Independence Day fireworks Sunday night, resulting in the arrests of a 15-year-old girl and her 44-year-old mother after an encounter with responding officers.
According to the Cottage Grove Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:46 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026, to the area of Jamaica Avenue and Indian Boulevard following reports of an alleged altercation. Police emphasized that the incident did not occur at Kingston Park, just off to the southeast of this incident, where many residents had gathered earlier for the community's fireworks celebration. Instead, the altercation took place in a nearby neighborhood after the fireworks had concluded.
Reported Firearm Not Confirmed
Authorities said initial reports included information about an alleged firearm. However, officers responding to the scene were unable to verify that a firearm was involved.
"As officers investigated the call, an officer witnessed a juvenile female chasing someone on foot in the general area," the department said.
Mother and Daughter Arrested
Police said an officer attempted to intervene after observing the juvenile running after another individual. According to the department, the 15-year-old girl and her 44-year-old mother failed to comply with officers' commands, prompting officers to deploy a chemical irritant before taking both individuals into custody.
Both were transported to the Cottage Grove Police Department for processing before being released later that evening pending possible charges.
Investigation Ongoing
The Cottage Grove Police Department said the incident remains under active investigation, and no additional information is being released at this time while investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
As with all investigations, any potential charges would remain allegations until formally filed and proven in court.
