DAKOTA COUNTY MN: Residents in parts of Apple Valley, Mendota Heights, and Sunfish Lake may notice a low-flying helicopter Friday as Dakota County Parks conducts an aerial deer survey over Lebanon Hills Regional Park and surrounding natural areas.

County officials said the helicopter flights are part of routine wildlife management efforts aimed at estimating deer population density throughout the park system and nearby habitat.

The data collected helps park managers make science-based decisions about deer management and long-term ecosystem health. Understanding herd size is critical for balancing wildlife populations with forest regeneration, native plant survival, and overall habitat sustainability.

Dakota County Parks acknowledged that low-flying aircraft can be unexpected or concerning for residents and park visitors. Officials said efforts are being made to minimize disruption and stress for both neighbors and wildlife during the survey work.

The aerial survey is expected to take place Friday, February 20. County officials are asking residents to help spread the word so community members understand the purpose of the helicopter activity.
