Detroit Man Charged After Allegedly Using Fake Instacart Order to Steal More Than $5,300 in iPads from Lakeville Target

BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - A 21-year-old Detroit, Michigan, man has been charged in Dakota County after prosecutors allege he used a fraudulent Instacart order to steal more than $5,300 worth of Apple iPads from a Lakeville Target store.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Dakota County District Court on August 5, 2026, Kevin Donte Wilson, of Detroit, Michigan, is charged with one count of felony theft of property valued over $5,000. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $20,000, or both, if convicted.
Alleged Theft Occurred at Lakeville Target
According to the complaint, officers with the Lakeville Police Department responded on July 4, 2026, to investigate a theft that had occurred the previous day at a Target store on Kenrick Avenue in Lakeville. Loss prevention employees reportedly provided investigators with surveillance video documenting the incident.
Prosecutors allege that on July 3, Wilson entered the store and went directly to the electronics department. He allegedly displayed what appeared to be an Instacart order on his phone to a Target employee, claiming he was there to pick up four iPads that had already been purchased.
Believing the order to be legitimate, the employee retrieved the four iPads and handed them to Wilson.
Fake Order Allegedly Used to Obtain Electronics
According to court documents, Wilson then proceeded to a point-of-sale station within the electronics department, where investigators say he placed the iPads into plastic shopping bags.
Surveillance video allegedly showed Wilson walking toward the front of the store and passing through the self-checkout area. While there, he briefly placed his phone face-down on one of the register scanners before exiting through the grocery-side doors without paying for the merchandise.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and determined that no transaction occurred when Wilson placed his phone on the scanner.
The stolen merchandise consisted of four Apple iPads with a combined retail value of $5,399.96, according to the complaint.
Similar Cases Pending in Other Counties
Court records indicate Wilson also has two pending criminal cases in Hennepin County and one pending case in Wright County. Prosecutors allege those cases involve the same scheme at other Target locations, according to the bail information filed with the court.
