Eden Prairie High School Cancels Homecoming Dance Following Shooting Outside Football Stadium

EDEN PRAIRIE MN - Eden Prairie High School has canceled its Homecoming Dance scheduled for Saturday evening following the shooting outside the school’s football stadium Friday night that left two people injured.
EPHS Principal Dr. Jaysen Anderson announced the cancellation in a message to families Saturday morning, saying the decision was made in recognition of the impact the shooting had on students, staff and families.
“While we believe we would have the planning, resources and support to make tonight’s event safe and enjoyable, holding a dance less than 24 hours after a trauma in our community feels out of place,” Anderson said.
The shooting occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. Friday outside Aerie Stadium on the north side of Eden Prairie High School during the school’s homecoming football game against Minnetonka.
According to Eden Prairie Police, two people were shot and transported to Hennepin Healthcare with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said neither victim is a student at Eden Prairie or Minnetonka schools.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted. As of the latest update from police, no arrests had been announced and the investigation remained active.
Anderson said many students, staff members and families were directly impacted by what happened and that the school needs to be prepared to support students and staff when they return Monday.
Additional information about those support efforts is expected to be shared with families by 9 p.m. Sunday.
Anderson said he plans to meet with student leaders and staff advisors early next week to determine next steps regarding a possible dance and other opportunities for the school community to come together.
Despite the events Friday night, Anderson said he was “deeply moved and inspired” by the care and support shown by members of the Eden Prairie community.
The school has not yet announced whether the Homecoming Dance will be rescheduled.
