Fatal Head-On Crash Closes Highway 3 in Castle Rock Township; One Airlifted from Scene

CASTLE ROCK, MINNESOTA – A fatal two-vehicle head-on crash shut down a portion of Highway 3 in rural Dakota County Sunday afternoon and prompted a large emergency response, including air medical transport. The crash occurred shortly before 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2026, near 255th Street West in Castle Rock Township.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Ford Fusion was traveling northbound on Highway 3 while a Chevy Suburban was traveling southbound. Investigators say the Suburban crossed over the lane lines and collided with the Ford in the northbound lanes near 255th Street West. Authorities have confirmed the crash was fatal. One person was transported from the scene by Life Link Air Care. An unconfirmed number of additional injuries were also reported, though the severity of those injuries has not yet been officially released.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene, including the Farmington Fire Department, Dakota County Sheriff's Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Allina Health EMS, Life Link Air Care, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. Two air care helicopters were called to the scene, but one was later canceled.

By approximately 4:15 p.m., Highway 3 was completely closed in the area as emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators processed evidence related to the crash. Motorists experienced significant delays and were advised to avoid the area.

The identities of those involved have not yet been released pending family notification.

The Minnesota State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
