Four Hospitalized After Serious Two-Vehicle Crash in Apple Valley
APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA—We’ve received an update on the serious two-vehicle crash at the busy intersection of County Road 42 and Flagstaff Drive, which sent four people to the hospital on Thursday morning, August 21, 2025.
The crash occurred around 10:42 a.m. and resulted in one vehicle rolling onto its side and another being spun off the road. Due to the severity of the incident, Apple Valley Police closed eastbound County Road 42 and restricted both northbound and southbound traffic on Flagstaff leading to the intersection.
Emergency Response
Apple Valley Fire, Apple Valley Police, and Allina EMS responded quickly to the scene. At least three ambulances were called, and officers confirmed that four individuals were transported to a trauma center with what were described as moderate to severe injuries.
First responders had to extricate one driver who was trapped in his vehicle. All occupants involved were reported to be wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Crash Details
According to the Apple Valley Police crash report, Unit #1, a 2021 Ford F-150 driven by an 80-year-old man from Farmington, was traveling eastbound in the right lane of County Road 42 approaching Flagstaff. Unit #2, a 2020 BMW X3 driven by a 58-year-old Apple Valley man, was attempting to turn left from westbound County Road 42 onto southbound Flagstaff when the collision occurred.
Witnesses reported that traffic in the left eastbound lane had slowed as the light turned yellow, but the F-150 continued through the intersection in the right lane. At the same time, the BMW began its left turn, likely unable to see the approaching truck due to stopped vehicles in the adjacent lane.
The F-150 struck the BMW at the intersection, causing the truck to roll onto its driver’s side and the BMW to spin off the road onto the shoulder. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.
Injuries Reported
Driver of the Ford F-150: Suffered serious head and limb injuries; trapped inside the vehicle before being transported to a trauma center.
Driver of the BMW: Disabled from injury and unable to answer questions coherently; transported to a trauma center.
Two additional passengers in the BMW: Both suffered serious head and limb injuries; transported by ambulance.
Police confirmed that no fatalities occurred. No citations were issued at the scene as the investigation continues.
Intersection and Traffic Signals
The crash report from the Apple Valley Police Department noted that the light at this intersection for County Road 42 is equipped with flashing yellow turn arrows for left-turning vehicles. While the witness accounts indicated the F-150 entered the intersection on a yellow light, the driver of the truck had the right-of-way. Several other witnesses confirmed that northbound and southbound Flagstaff traffic had red lights at the time of the crash.
The Apple Valley Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
