MINNEAPOLIS, MN - A 27-year-old woman has been charged with two felony counts of theft after allegedly stealing at least $44,750 from her employer through unauthorized gift card transactions and fraudulent money orders. According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court, investigative reports indicate the total amount stolen may be as high as $54,398.87.

Destiny Renee Carroll faces one count of theft by diversion of corporate property and one count of theft by swindle. Prosecutors allege the thefts occurred between June 1 and October 27, 2026.

According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a report of employee theft on November 3 at a business located in the 4600 block of Snelling Avenue in Hennepin County. A loss prevention employee told investigators the business had been conducting an internal investigation into suspected theft involving Carroll.

Carroll had reportedly worked for the business as an e-commerce lead since April 2022. Her position allowed her to load company funds onto gift cards and issue money orders as part of her regular employment responsibilities.

Investigators allege that between June 1 and October 27, Carroll fraudulently transferred at least $40,000 in company funds onto gift cards and used the money for personal expenses, including rent, electricity bills, and Uber rides.

The complaint further alleges Carroll generated fraudulent money orders totaling an additional $4,750, bringing the documented theft amount to at least $44,750.

According to prosecutors, Carroll admitted during a post-Miranda interview that she had conducted approximately 40 unauthorized transactions beginning in June. Each transaction allegedly involved transferring $1,000 onto two gift cards.

Carroll reportedly told investigators the total amount taken was between $40,000 and $50,000. She also allegedly acknowledged switching to money orders after the gift card transactions stopped working.

According to the complaint, Carroll stated she generated approximately 10 to 11 fraudulent money orders totaling $4,750 during a single day in October.

Carroll has been charged with felony theft by diversion of corporate property under Minnesota Statute 609.52, subdivision 2(a)(15), and felony theft by swindle under subdivision 2(a)(4).

Both charges involve property valued at more than $35,000. Each offense carries a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both, if convicted. These are maximum penalties for each charge and do not necessarily represent the sentence Carroll would receive if convicted.

According to the complaint, Carroll was in custody in Hennepin County at the time of filing.

The allegations remain subject to court proceedings. Carroll is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
