INVER GROVE HEIGHTS MN: An Inver Grove Heights woman is facing two felony charges after authorities allege she kicked a police officer in the face and spit on officers during an arrest in Inver Grove Heights.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Dakota County District Court, Breanna Rose Bernard, 21, of Inver Grove Heights, is charged with one count of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer resulting in demonstrable bodily harm and one count of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer involving the transfer of bodily fluids.
The charges stem from an incident on May 29, 2026.
According to the complaint, officers with the Inver Grove Heights Police Department were dispatched to a residence for a report that Bernard was refusing to leave the property. When officers arrived, they allegedly observed Bernard appearing highly intoxicated.
Court documents state Bernard initially left the property in a vehicle driven by another person. However, officers were later informed that she had exited the vehicle and was walking back toward the residence. Officers subsequently located Bernard allegedly screaming and walking in the middle of a roadway.
Authorities say officers decided to detain Bernard due to her behavior. According to the complaint, Bernard then fled from officers and was later found crawling out of trees and bushes in a backyard.
After being placed under arrest, Bernard allegedly became combative, swore at officers, and at one point threatened officers by stating, “I am going to kill you,” according to the complaint.
Authorities allege Bernard resisted arrest and kicked one officer in the face with her right foot. The complaint states the kick was forceful enough to knock the officer’s hat off and temporarily affect vision in the officer’s right eye. The officer reportedly suffered significant redness and soreness to the face.
The complaint further alleges that while officers were securing Bernard in a squad vehicle, she spit on two officers. One officer reported being struck on the face and ear by saliva.
During transport to jail, Bernard allegedly continued resisting and kicked the transport cage more than 20 times, according to court records.
If convicted of either felony charge, Bernard faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of up to $6,000.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are only accusations, and Bernard is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
