Body Recovered from Mississippi River Near Kaposia Landing; Investigation Underway in South St. Paul

Published: March 3rd, 2026

SOUTH ST. PAUL, MN — Authorities in South St. Paul are investigating after a body was discovered in the Mississippi River near Kaposia Landing Tuesday afternoon, prompting a coordinated response from multiple public safety agencies. The incident unfolded around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, when responders were called to the riverfront area near Kaposia Landing for a reported body in the water.

Personnel from the South St. Paul Police Department and the Dakota County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and began what authorities described as a death investigation and water recovery operation. The South Metro Fire Department was also briefly on scene to assist.

In a public statement, South St. Paul police confirmed that their officers were assisting the sheriff’s office during the recovery operation.

“Our staff, along with our partners at South Metro Fire, are currently assisting the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office with a recovery in the Mississippi River down by Kaposia Landing,” the department said in a message to residents.

Officials noted that a large number of emergency vehicles would be present in the area as crews worked the scene but emphasized there was no known threat to the public. Because the investigation began with a water recovery, the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is serving as the lead investigating agency, authorities said.

Police also asked the public to avoid the immediate area and allow responders space to work, noting that the investigation was still in its early stages.

“At this time, out of respect for the deceased, please give our responders some space to work,” the department said.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding the identity of the individual recovered, the circumstances surrounding the death, or whether foul play is suspected. The investigation remains active and ongoing, and officials say additional details will be released once more information becomes available.
