Apple Valley Park Shooting Suspect Pleads Guilty to First-Degree Assault; Attempted Murder Charge to Be Dismissed
Published: July 6, 2026
APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA: The man accused of shooting a teenage boy in the face during a confrontation at an Apple Valley park in 2025 has pleaded guilty to first-degree assault as part of a negotiated plea agreement filed in Dakota County District Court.
According to court documents filed Monday, July 6, 2026, 21-year-old Ibrahim Ali Mohamed is agreeing to plead guilty to one count of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss the original charge of attempted second-degree murder with intent, not premeditated.
The plea agreement was filed following a hearing Monday in Dakota County District Court in Hastings.
Under the terms of the agreement, both parties are requesting a prison sentence ranging between 86 and 129 months, or approximately 7 years, 2 months to 10 years, 9 months. The final sentence will be determined by the court at a future sentencing hearing later this fall.
Shooting Left Teen With Life-Threatening Injuries
The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Kelley Park in Apple Valley. According to the original criminal complaint, Apple Valley police responded after multiple 911 callers reported a man armed with a handgun chasing people through the busy community park before gunfire erupted. Witnesses described seeing a suspect wearing a white hoodie and black ski mask, while several callers reported that shots had been fired and that a person had been struck.
Investigators later identified Mohamed as the suspected shooter.
Authorities alleged that Mohamed had traveled to Kelley Park with two friends after using his mother's phone to locate his sister, who was there. Court documents state he became involved in a confrontation with another group shortly after arriving. Witnesses told investigators Mohamed pulled a handgun from beneath his hoodie during the argument and pointed it at another individual. As tensions escalated, bystanders attempted to intervene.
Victim Shot in the Face
According to prosecutors, the victim arrived at Kelley Park after receiving a phone call in which someone allegedly threatened to kill a friend if he did not return to the park. As he arrived, witnesses warned him that someone was armed. Moments later, prosecutors say Mohamed fired multiple rounds, striking the victim in the face.
The victim suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Court records indicate the shooting caused severe trauma, including:
Extensive injuries to the face and neck.
Lacerations to the chest.
Significant tongue injuries.
Multiple fractures involving the jaw and teeth.
The injuries were described by prosecutors as life-threatening.
Mohamed Admitted Firing Multiple Rounds
According to investigators, Mohamed later admitted during a police interview that he fired approximately 10 rounds from a Polymer80-style 9mm handgun. He claimed he believed occupants of two vehicles entering the park were about to shoot him, prompting him to open fire. However, investigators said they found no evidence that anyone inside the victim's vehicle fired any shots.
Search warrants executed on Mohamed's cellphone and social media accounts allegedly uncovered videos showing Mohamed and others displaying firearms, including what investigators believed was the same handgun used during the shooting. Investigators also recovered a message allegedly sent by Mohamed following the shooting stating, "I'm almost about to [get] locked up. The girls are snitching."
Arrested Weeks Later
Although the shooting occurred on May 10, 2025, Mohamed was not immediately taken into custody. The Dakota County Attorney's Office later filed charges and obtained a nationwide arrest warrant. Mohamed was arrested by Apple Valley police in Minneapolis shortly after 1 p.m. on June 30, 2025.
He was originally charged with:
Attempted Second-Degree Murder (Intentional, Not Premeditated)
First-Degree Assault (Great Bodily Harm)
Plea Agreement Resolves Attempted Murder Charge
Monday's guilty plea resolves the most serious allegations in the case without the need for a jury trial. If the court accepts the plea agreement at sentencing, Mohamed will be convicted of first-degree assault, while the attempted murder charge will be dismissed.
The court will determine the final prison sentence within the agreed-upon range of 86 to 129 months. The sentencing date was set for October 7, 2026.
