Weekend Closures Continue as Hwy 77 Reconstruction Project Moves Forward in Eagan and Apple Valley
Published: July 11th, 2026
EAGAN/APPLE VALLEY:Drivers across the south metro should prepare for another weekend of significant delays as major closures take effect along Highway 77 during an ongoing reconstruction project expected to continue into next year.
The work is part of a multi-year effort to repair and resurface Highway 77 between 138th Street in Apple Valley and the Minnesota River Bridge while also rehabilitating 10 bridges along the corridor. The project is intended to improve pavement conditions, strengthen the roadway, enhance accessibility, update drainage systems, and widen several ramps.
Current traffic impacts
Through 5 a.m. Monday, July 13, the following closures are in effect:
Northbound Highway 77 is closed between Interstate 35E and the Minnesota River Bridge.
Detour: Southbound Highway 77 to northbound I-35E, westbound I-494, then back to Highway 77.
Northbound Highway 77 is reduced to two lanes between Diffley Road and the Minnesota River Bridge from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Northbound Highway 77 ramps to and from Highway 13 are closed through 5 a.m. Monday, July 13, with the same detour in place.
Access to homes and businesses will remain open throughout construction, although traffic delays are expected. All traffic impacts remain weather dependent.
Upcoming closures
MnDOT has also announced several additional weekend and extended closures later this month:
July 17–20: Northbound I-35E ramps to and from Highway 77 will close.
Starting July 20 through late August: Southbound Highway 77 ramps to and from McAndrews Road will close.
July 24–27: Southbound Highway 77 will be closed between Killebrew Drive and Diffley Road.
July 31–Aug. 3: Southbound I-35E ramps to and from Highway 77 will close.
Motorists should expect additional weekend road, lane, ramp, and bridge closures throughout the construction season.
Looking ahead
Construction will continue into 2027, when Highway 77 will operate with reduced lanes and head-to-head traffic while crews rebuild one side of the highway at a time. Pedestrians should also expect the closure of the Minnesota River Bridge pedestrian path during a future phase of the project, with a detour planned via Interstate 35W.
MnDOT says the project is focused on improving ride quality and extending the life of the roadway. No funding is currently available for future traffic-capacity or mobility improvements along the corridor.
