FARMINGTON, MINNESOTA - Residents in Farmington and nearby communities will have an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted household items and sensitive documents during an upcoming spring recycling event.
The Mattress/Box Spring Drop-Off & Document Shred Event is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Farmington Maintenance Facility, 19650 Municipal Drive. The event will take place rain or shine.
Mattress and Box Spring Disposal
Residents can bring mattresses and box springs for disposal at a cost of $30 per item, regardless of size. Payment must be made directly to Certified Recycling and is limited to cash or checks, payable to Certified Recycling. Officials note that pricing is subject to change.
Mattresses that are still in good condition will be donated to Bridging, while all other items will be deconstructed and recycled by Certified Recycling.
Provided by the City of Farmington.
Free Document Shredding
The event will also offer free document shredding, providing residents with a secure way to dispose of personal paperwork. Materials will be shredded on-site by a company certified by the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) and then recycled into paper pulp.
There is no limit to the number of documents residents can bring, but several guidelines must be followed:
Staples and paper clips may remain attached
Remove large metal binder clips and three-ring binders
No business documents accepted
No pre-shredded paper (must be disposed of in the trash)
No plastic items, including credit cards
Bundled papers, such as envelopes or checkbooks, are allowed if under 2 inches thick
Bring documents in paper bags for faster service
Participants should be prepared to keep boxes or plastic bags if not using paper bags
Event Process and Participation
To ensure a smooth and efficient process, residents are asked to remain in their vehicles as staff will unload materials.
The event is open to residents of Farmington and surrounding communities, including Empire, Lakeville, Castle Rock, and Coates.
Additional Recycling Resources
Residents looking to dispose of other materials are encouraged to consult the Dakota County Recycling Guide, which provides detailed information on how to properly recycle or dispose of a wide range of items.
Supporting Sustainability Efforts
City officials say the event provides a convenient way for residents to responsibly dispose of bulky items and protect sensitive information, while also supporting reuse efforts through donations and environmentally responsible recycling.
With spring cleaning season underway, the event offers a timely opportunity for residents to declutter while contributing to sustainability efforts across the region.
