Minneapolis Man Charged After Allegedly Shooting Acquaintance Multiple Times Outside Bar

MINNEAPOLIS: A Minneapolis man has been charged in Hennepin County District Court after prosecutors allege he shot another man multiple times outside a northeast Minneapolis bar, leaving the victim with serious injuries that required emergency surgery.
According to the criminal complaint, Joe Louis Hall Jr., 47, is charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm while using a firearm and two counts of illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence.
The charges stem from a shooting reported shortly before 2 a.m. on June 28 outside the Palace Bar and Grill in the 2500 block of 4th Street NE. According to the complaint, the victim was shot multiple times and made it back inside the bar, where officers provided aid until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a hospital for emergency surgery, and court documents state he remained hospitalized into July.
According to prosecutors, surveillance video captured a brief encounter between Hall and the victim before Hall allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots. Investigators recovered four spent shell casings at the scene.
The complaint states DNA recovered from the shell casings helped identify Hall as the suspect. He was arrested on Aug. 3.
During a post-Miranda interview, Hall allegedly admitted he had argued with the victim, whom he had known for several years, and claimed the victim had threatened him in the past. According to the complaint, Hall told investigators he believed the victim had a gun and admitted shooting him four to five times, saying he "wasn't trying to kill him." Hall also allegedly admitted possessing a different firearm that was later recovered from his vehicle after investigators obtained a search warrant.
Court records allege Hall is prohibited from possessing firearms because of prior convictions and adjudications involving crimes of violence, including prior illegal firearm possession convictions and a federal cocaine distribution conviction.
Hall remains in custody. The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
