Large Police Response to Reported Shots Fired in Newport Ends With No Evidence of Shooting

NEWPORT, MINNESOTA: A large law enforcement response Tuesday evening in Newport ended without officers finding any evidence that a shooting or other traumatic incident had occurred, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities were dispatched shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, to the 100 block of Red Rock Xing - Red Rock Apartments on Maxwell Avenue, after receiving a report of possible shots fired. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, residents in the area reported hearing screaming followed by two loud bangs, prompting deputies to respond and investigate the possibility of a shooting.
Deputies were assisted by additional law enforcement agencies as they conducted an extensive search of every apartment in the building to determine whether anyone had been injured or if a crime had occurred.
Despite the initial reports, investigators said they found no evidence of a shooting or any other traumatic incident. Authorities reported they did not locate any shell casings, physical evidence, or other indicators that gunfire had occurred, and no victims were identified during the investigation.
The large police presence drew attention from nearby residents, with numerous law enforcement vehicles seen throughout the area while deputies searched.
After completing their investigation, officials determined there was no ongoing threat to the public. The scene was officially cleared at approximately 9:37 p.m.
At this time, the Washington County Sheriff's Office has not released any additional information regarding what may have caused the reported screaming and loud noises.
The investigation concluded without further incident.
In a statement, Newport Mayor Elliott said, “Although the investigation did not identify evidence of a shooting, we encourage residents to call 9-1-1 anytime they believe there may be an emergency or are concerned about public safety.”
