Officer Stabbed During Early Morning Disturbance in Downtown Duluth

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS MN: A 22-year-old Duluth man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a police officer early Saturday morning during a disturbance involving ambulance crews in downtown Duluth.

According to the Duluth Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:35 a.m. on February 21, 2026, to the area of 1st Avenue West and 1st Street for a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance. The man was reportedly striking the side of a Mayo Ambulance vehicle and threatening paramedics who were inside.

Officers located the suspect near 1st Avenue West and 2nd Street. When an officer attempted to detain him, police say the man actively resisted and stabbed the officer in the leg.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Kevin Daniel Couillard of Duluth, was taken into custody and booked into the St. Louis County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of First-Degree Assault, Disorderly Conduct, Fleeing on Foot, Obstructing Legal Process, and Public Nuisance.

The officer’s injury was not considered life-threatening but required transport to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities say the officer has since been treated and released.
